Even this morning, he had a couple of them in his shirt pocket, clearly visible through the thin white fabric. He had a lucky spot at the counter where he sat when he scratched off the numbers—at least he called it a lucky spot, though as far as I knew all Theo won were a few bucks every so often, money he used to increase his weekly investment in lottery tickets. The clatter of the toilet’s lid, hastily lifted, hitting against the tank. Through the white noise of the rushing water, I heard her voice, a small cracked suffering groan.
