They could spend days, weeks, months thinking about it and preparing for it, taking umpteen courses and reading books on how to walk but never actually do it. Perfectionists and procrastinators can learn a lot from toddlers. Not only do they put off doing things, but sometimes they’re so paralysed by the fear of not getting it right that they shelve an idea completely. They over-think and over-prepare, worried that they’ll never know enough or be good enough.
One of the best ways to beat procrastination is to make yourself accountable to someone else. Whether it’s a friend or family member, your boss or your coach, making a firm commitment to someone else will make a huge difference to your actually knuckling down and doing it. So, try making yourself accountable to someone for those task(s) you’ve been putting off. Perhaps you could ‘buddy up’ with someone else: make a commitment to each other, agree a deadline and check in with each other to make sure the job is done.
